Stephen describes himself as a ‘lifer’ at the bank, having started his banking career in 1983 as a graduate trainee. He has held a number of positions over the years, from early roles in Credit Risk through branch management to Communications Director. Outside LBG, Stephen is also chairman of PRIME Cymru – one of HRH Prince of Wales’ core charities; represents the UK at the European Banking Federation on business finance matters and is a board director of UK Business Angels Association.
Stephen’s broad remit covers the management and influencing of UK and European business policy and the resulting impacts on SMEs and corporates. Activities range from working with business groups, politicians and businesses and supporting political advocacy activity through to LBG key project stakeholder engagement ensuring projects serve the best interests of our clients and the Group’s reputation. Current projects include implementation of the Competition & Markets Authority enquiry remedies which will shape the future of financial institutions in our core retail and commercial banking markets through to the current industry and political proposals for an Alternative Business Dispute Resolution Mechanism and the Government’s evolving Industrial Strategy. To support the new finance trade association, Stephen developed communication and branding and continues to work with UK Finance to ensure it meets the needs of its members.
Stephen read Economics at University College London and has professional qualifications in banking and marketing. He lives in North Somerset and is married to Cordelia, a GP. They have three grown-up children and two gun dogs
