This award is aimed at startups or early-stage businesses in any aspect of technology. The business should have received angel investment in the past 18 months, which can also include co-investment funding, and may have also have received other external finance, including R&D grants/awards.

Nominations for this award must demonstrate that the business is innovative; the technology is disrupting a key market, business or societal challenge; and has the capacity to achieve significant high growth. Applicants must show how the investment has facilitated further development of the technology business and impacted on its growth potential and competitiveness. Both the business and the investor(s) should be identified for the award.

This award is aimed at startups or early-stage businesses that are building high growth potential business in the financial technology (‘FinTech’) sector. The award is open to any area of FinTech. The business should have received angel investment in the past 12 months and could have also accessed additional finance sources.

Best Angel-VC Scale-up Investment

This award is aimed at high growth potential businesses that have received both angel and VC investment to enable them to successfully scale up. The business should have received investment in the past 18 months and the investment could include angels and VC co-investing in the same deal, or could be VC following on from angel finance. The angel finance could come from either an individual or group and the VC finance could come from a VC/PE fund, co-investment fund or VCT.

Nominations for this award can be in any sector but must demonstrate that the business is innovative and has the capability to disrupt the market or industry and must clearly show that the investment has facilitated the scaling up of the company. Both the business and the angel and VC investors should be identified for the award.

Best Female-Led Investment

This award is aimed at businesses in any sector that have successfully accessed Angel Investment during the past 12 months where the investment has been led by a woman investor acting on her own or as part of a syndicate.

The business can be in any sector, but Nominations for this award must demonstrate that the business is innovative, with high growth potential and that the lead female investor has brought significant added value to the investee business. Nominations are especially welcome where the investee is a woman, but this is not a core requirement.

Best Investment in a High Growth Female Founder

This award is aimed at women founders and leaders of high growth potential businesses. The business can be in any sector and can be exclusively led by women, or as part of a diverse leadership team. The business must have successfully accessed angel investment during the past 18 months. Nominations will be especially welcome where the investment has included investment from a female business angel, either acting on her own or as part of a diverse syndicate.

All nominations should demonstrate that the female founders have taken a clear role in supporting the growth and innovation of the business. Nominations should also demonstrate that the investment has supported the further growth and scale-up of the business and identify the role the investors have played where possible.

Best International Growth and Expansion

This award is open to early-stage businesses that have successfully scaled internationally following equity investment. Any sector or stage of business can be considered. The company may have been backed by individual business angels, syndicates, VCs and crowdfunders, and may also have accessed other sources of investment that have helped support international growth and market expansion. The award is open to UK-based businesses, and businesses from outside the UK that have successfully entered the UK marketplace, as a result of the investment.

Nominations should demonstrate that the business is innovative with strong high growth potential and should show how the investment has enabled them to successfully access new markets and scale. Information on future planned growth and further market access should also be provided.

Best New Entrant to the Angel Ecosystem

This award is open to any new organisation – including networks, groups, new funds and funding models, as well as new services or products – that can be shown to add clear value to the angel and early-stage investment market. The activities can include both direct and online approaches.

Nominations should demonstrate what is new or disruptive about their offering within the ecosystem and what impact it has had to date on the angel and early-stage marketplace and prospects for scaling the approach.

Patient Capital Investment of the Year

This award is aimed at businesses in any sector that have successfully accessed investment to support their long-term growth. The business can be in any sector but should demonstrate that it is innovative with high growth potential and has received angel investment in the past and which could have included more than one round. 

Nominations should demonstrate that the business has gone on to raise a significant level of “patient capital” which can be from a one or several sources including, VC, Venture debt, Corporates, PE or through public markets (AIM) to enable the company to achieve significant growth and expansion.

Lead Syndicate of the year 2018

This award is open to active angel investors working as syndicates (minimum 3 individual investors). The syndicate may have invested either as part of a business angel network, a formally structured syndicate or have operated informally. Members of the syndicate must have been co-investing together on a regular basis over the past year. The syndicate may be backing businesses at any point in the funding cycle and may focus on one specific sector or be active in a range of sectors or with a geographic focus. The syndicate may be the main investor or co-invest alongside other finance sources, including other syndicates.

Nominations should demonstrate how the syndicate brings more than just capital to the companies they back. Nominations should demonstrate where the syndicate has added value in helping the growth of their investee businesses and should identify the role taken by the lead angel where appropriate.

UKBAA Angel Investor of the Year 2018

This award is aimed at angel investors who can demonstrate that they have been very active in backing high growth potential startups and early-stage businesses in the UK during the past 12 months. Active female angels are especially encouraged to apply.

Nominations should show that the angel investor has shown the capacity to not only bring finance to their investee businesses, but also clear added value such as access to experience, skills, contacts and mentoring, or further finance to support the successful growth and scale-up of their portfolio. The investor can be acting as a lead angel as part of a syndicate or group, or on their own.

It should also be noted that in view of the prestigious nature of this award, the winner will be expected to be an ambassador for angel investing on behalf of UKBAA for 2017-18 and be prepared to engage in events and activities organised by UKBAA that are aimed at promoting angel investing.
